FAQ

What do I need to know about car mechanics?

You don't need to know anything about cars to work as an auto mechanic. It's enough to know how to fix things. Most people start by fixing things like changing tires or fitting brake pads.

You need to be able read and comprehend diagrams, follow written instructions and adhere to basic principles of good practice. It is also important to know how to determine if parts are damaged or need to be replaced.

You should not attempt to fix vehicles without proper training and guidance. This is especially important if you work with expensive parts such as transmissions or engines.

Even though you don't need to be an expert on cars, it is important to understand the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and physical physics. This is how you understand the mechanisms behind engines and brakes.

You should also be ready to handle all kinds of situations. You might be required to work on a vehicle that was involved in an accident. Also, you'll need to be familiar with dealing with accidents or breakdowns.

Finally, you must be willing to learn new skills quickly. It is important to be able both to diagnose problems and perform simple maintenance tasks, such as tightening nuts.

Is it worthwhile to become a mechanic?

This question is dependent on your life goals. If you are looking to make money, then yes. But if meaning and purpose is what you seek, then no.

If you don’t have any mechanical skills, it’s pointless to get into it. It will just waste your time. It's not going to make you rich. It won't make your name famous. It's unlikely that it will change your life.

This would require you to spend many years learning how to properly do everything. Then you'd still have to pay someone else to fix your car when it breaks down. Most people avoid doing this. They find something more worthwhile.

You can make a lot of money if you are looking to do well. You can't live a meaningful existence if your goal is to make a living in the mechanic's business.

Is it difficult to become a mechanic apprentice

It's not simple, but you can learn quickly and there are many avenues for advancement.

You will need patience and perseverance. You should also be able to repair cars, trucks, and motorbikes.

Customers and relatives can exert a lot on you. You shouldn't feel pressured to make decisions that you don't like.

This is a career that you might enjoy if you are passionate about fixing cars. This job allows you to make a decent wage and build up your company.

Perhaps you prefer a different route. This is where you might be interested in becoming a technician.

This requires you to use your technical expertise in support of other workers. You might be able to assist technicians in troubleshooting problems or teach them new techniques.

Another option is becoming a service advisor. When customers bring their cars into a garage, they will receive advice and assistance.

It all depends on your goals. There are plenty of options available, and you can choose which suits you best.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

After completing the training, you'll be ready to start work.

Register with the government if you want to open your garage. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages are not associated with any one dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. This means that these jobs are usually more lucrative than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

You can switch jobs easily. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

Unfortunately, finding a new job can be difficult. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
