The SS logo is a distinguishing part of each car's designs and is one of Grand National's most iconic symbols.

Chevrolet Impala SS 409

The Chevrolet Impala SS had a small-block engine. This engine was the first to feature in a front wheel-drive Chevrolet sedan since 1996 Caprice. Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454

The 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS had a distinctive instrument cluster. The standard instrument cluster included a speedometer and a large fuel gauge in a blanked-out opening. The special instrument panel included a tachometer and a clock. The fuel gauge was relocated to a smaller cluster of gauges on the outer edges of the instrument panel. Stereo stripes and quad headlights were also options.

How to Become an Automotive Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeships last for three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
